259: Small Mercies
It doesn’t take much to please a dog - any dog.
My beans did jut that this week when I overheard them say they were going to the Pets At Home store in Meanwood “to get some more biscuits for Gina”.
“More biscuits” is one of the best phrases in the English language, if used without a qualifying, negative word or phrase such as “No” as in “No more biscuits for you”. More biscuits is up there (at the top of the chart) with ”No walkies today, I’ve got a bad back”.
I assume that human beans have such favourite phrases too.
When listening to my beans, top of their lists appear to be:
John - “Shall I open a bottle of wine” (He always does!)
Jacky - “Is there any tennis on today?” (There always is!)
Phil - “I’ll just book my flight” (He always does!)
(Notice the confidence of youth. older beans ask a question. The youngest makes a statement.)
Incidentally, I think I have just worked out why the word ‘flight’ is used for sir travel. I think it’s because a flight is most often used to escape something - the drudgery of work, an oppressive relationship, boredom, a life not lived to the full, and so on. Otherwise, why would human beans spend so much money on flights and holidays? (Answers on a postcard from your destination of choice.)
Anyway, that’s too much thinking for one week, for one dog.
I’m off to work out how to speak English sufficiently well to say :”More biscuits”.
