142: World Cup Malarkey

Every time one of my human beans turns on the TV at the moment, the programme consists of lots of men running around chasing what I believe is called a football. They are evidently playing a game which, for some inexplicable reason, is also called football. The men chasing the football as part of the game of football are referred to as footballers. (And you thought the English language was sophisticated and nuanced!)

Has the world (or at least the world of TV) gone mad?  there used to be about 3 or 4 hours of football on TV every week. At the moment it is about 3 or 4 hours every day.

I find it hard to believe that anyone needs that much football in their life.

On listening more carefully, I found out that the sheer quantity of football is because there is a special football occasion - called a World Cup. (A cup as big as the world is something I’d like to see.)

I have listened attentively during the football matches themselves but can’t work out what a World Cup really is.

I guess, once more, there is too big a gap between dog and human culture, so I’ve given up trying to analyse or understand.

I just want it to be over.
