23: Making Faces
On TV this morning were 2 dogs that have become an Internet sensation - Olive and Mabel, whose owner, BBC Sports commentator Andrew Cotter, has been making short videos of him commentating on the dog’s everyday activities. (If you haven’t seen them on YouTube, just Google ‘Olive and Mabel’.)
It set me thinking how I might best appear on TV or in movies. I would admit that I am not the most outgoing dog but I think in certain roles I could make an impact.
I have been practising my poses, looks, stares and simple dramatic phrases in front of the mirrored wardrobes in one of the bedrooms.
I have perfected looks of disdain, boredom, resigned acceptance and pained victim. I tried ‘quizzical’ but couldn’t maintain it for more than a few seconds. I also tried amusement and happiness but they are too far out of my comfort zone.
So, now I have to find plays/films and roles that match my repertoire of role/skill …. or hit films that can be re-made with a dog as the star - as ‘talkies’ become ‘walkies’. My short list so far consists of:
Citizen Dane
Pup Fiction
The Dogfather
Paws
Raging Bulldog
Some Like It, Spot
Raiders of the Lost Bark
Seven Samoyeds
The Bone Ranger
A Fistful of Collars
Additional suggestions are welcome.
While you are thinking, I’m off back to the mirrors. I must add a ‘delighted’ face for when I get my first award.
