262: I’m British
I used this title deliberately - not to be nationalistic , but to reflect on the fact that I have recognised that I am both getting old and sinking deeper into what I believe is the British culture and character.
Let me explain.
This week ,it has mostly been bright and sunny. However it has been awfully cold. So, in the mornings the weather looks attractive - but in reality it is not! I was commenting on this to some of my friends in the park and we had a long conversation about weather. On returning to my master (my beloved John) I found him in conversation with a couple of his park acquaintances (who I shall describe as ‘of a certain age’). They were talking about …. the weather. I am sure there were lots of other similar conversations in the park - between friends and acquaintances, public and park-keepers - about the same topic. This phenomenon is not uniquely British, but the Brits do seem to have a greater tendency to discuss meteorological conditions - presumably because they change so frequently.
So, I am just settling into the British character and spirit. I don’t know whether to be proud or ashamed, voluble or reticent.
What would a true Brit (was that a John Wayne film?) do?
