149: Doctor, Doctor!

I regularly go to the vet - for checkups, minor ailments, vaccinations, etc.

A vet is a doctor for animals - modelled on ?????

I’ve tried to research the concept of ‘doctor’ but it’s hard to work out if a doctor is a historical concept from the olden days (like the 1990s) or a mythical being.

Human beans seem to talk of them fondly but few have actually seen one in recent times.  I think I saw one recently on TV but he (for it was a man - or a boy at least) was only a ‘junior doctor’ and I don’t think he was a practising doctor - he was on TV because he was threatening to go on strike.

It seems the concept of doctor is dying along with the ENNAITCHESS (which has to be spoken in whispered, revered tones). Soon, hospitals will be no more - or will simply be technology museums with no-one who knows how to operate the technology.

Local surgeries will be staffed by nurses (and perhaps pharmacists) but you won’t be able to see them because you won’t be able to get past the ‘guardians of the service’ - the receptionists - or ‘care path advisers’ as I believe they are now known.

I hope this terrible travesty does not spread to the veterinary service.
